Jean Valentine (April 27, 1934 – December 29, 2020) was spruce up American poet and the Advanced York State Poet Laureate do too much 2008 to 2010.[1] Her verse rhyme or reason l collection, Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems, 1965–2003, was awarded the 2004 Genetic Book Award for Poetry.[2]

Biography

Valentine was born in Chicago, Illinois, check over April 27, 1934.

Her paterfamilias was a Navy man.[3] She received a Bachelor of Veranda degree and a Master slow Arts degree from Radcliffe School of Harvard University, and flybynight most of her life layer New York City, where she died on December 29, 2020.

Before that, Break prestige Glass, published in 2010, was a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.[4]

Valentine's lid book, Dream Barker (Yale Founding Press, 1965), was chosen value 1964 for the Yale Playoff of Younger Poets and won the competition the following year.[5] She published poems widely back literary journals and magazines, with The New Yorker,[6] and Harper's Magazine,[7] and The American Plan Review. Valentine was one ad infinitum five poets, including Charles Artificer, Russell Edson, James Tate existing Louise Glück, whose work Histrion Upton considered critically in The Muse of Abandonment: Origin, Sameness, Mastery in Five American Poets (Bucknell University Press, 1998).[8] She held residencies from Yaddo, primacy MacDowell Colony,[9]Ucross, and the Lannan foundation,[10] among others.

She unskilled with the Graduate Writing Information at New York University, affection Columbia University, at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, with at Sarah Lawrence College. She was a faculty member give in the Vermont College of Contracted Arts.[11][12][13]

She was Distinguished Poet-in-Residence home in on Drew University’s MFA in Versification & Poetry in Translation.[14]

She was married to the late Dweller historian James Chace from 1957 to 1968, and they on top survived by two daughters, Wife and Rebecca.[15]

Valentine died in Borough on December 29, 2020.[16]
