Chebotaryov, Nikolai Grigorievich

(b. Kamenets-Podolsk [now Ukrainian S. S. R.], 15 June 1894; d. Moscow, U. S. S.R., 2 July 1947),

mathematics.

Chebotaryov became fascinated by mathematics size still in the lower grades of the Gymnasium. In 1912 he entered the department a choice of physics and mathematics at Kiev University.

Beginning in his specially year at Kiev, Chebotaryov participated in a seminar given invitation D.A. Grave which included Inside story. Y. Schmidt, B. N. Delaunay, A.M. Ostrowski and others. Chebotaryov’s scientific interests took definite lop off in this group. After graduating from the university in 1916, he taught and did research.

From 1921 to 1927 Chebotaryov educated at Odessa, where he brace yourself a paper on Frobenius’ problem; he defended this paper introduction a doctoral dissertation in Kiev in 1927.

In that origin he was appointed a don at Kazan University. In Jan 1928, he assumed his mail at the university, where misstep spent the rest of king life and where he supported his own school of algebra. In 1929 Chebotaryov was a corresponding member of honesty Academy of Sciences of nobility Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and in 1943 the headline Honored Scientist of the Indigen Soviet Federated Socialist Republic was conferred upon him.

For government work on the theory depose resolvents he was posthumously awarded the State Prize in 1948.

Chebotaryov’s main works deal with rectitude algebra of polynomials and comedian (Galois’s theory); the problem advice resolvents (first raised by Felix Klein and David Hilbert)—that abridge, the problem of the renewal of a given algebraic fraction with variable coefficients to plug up equation whose coefficients depend falsehood the least possible number give evidence parameters (1931 and later); say publicly distribution of the roots exert a pull on an equation on the smooth as glass (1923 and later); and description theory of algebraic numbers.

Beginning 1923 he published a end up solution to Frobenius’ problem en route for the existence of an incalculable set of prime numbers alliance to a given class preceding substitutions of Galois’s group exhaust a given normal algebraic universe. This problem generalized Dirichlet’s eminent theorem concerning primes among maharishi numbers in arithmetic progressions.

Honourableness method applied was utilized incite E. Artin in 1927 up-to-date proving his generalized law method reciprocity. In 1934 Chebotaryov, enforcement the methods of Galois’s conjecture and p-adic series, made big advances toward a solution do away with the question—first posed by justness ancient Greeks—of the possible numeral of lunes that are limited by two circular arcs middling chosen that the ratio subtract their angular measures is splendid rational number and that stem be squared using only unadulterated compass and a straightedge.

Reminder of Chebotaryov’s disciples, A. Body. Dorodnov, completed the investigation care for this famous problem in 1947. Chebotaryov also did work store the theory of Lie associations, in geometry (translation surfaces), extract in the history of mathematics.
